Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal to Buy
The price of Bitcoin, currently at $76,923.89, has surged past $78,000, bolstering the overall cryptocurrency market. This upward movement follows an improvement in risk sentiment after U.S. President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran, also leading to gains in stock index futures. After weeks of fluctuating between $65,000 and $75,000, Bitcoin has finally broken through, providing momentum traders with the signal they have been anticipating. Momentum traders typically buy when there is evidence of an upward trend, and Bitcoin's recent surge could attract more buyers, thereby increasing its momentum. According to the first law of motion, an object in motion will continue to move unless acted upon by an external force, a principle that can be applied to financial markets. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been confined to a range of $65 to $75 for months, and breaking out of this range is significant as it alters behavior. Sellers who were previously comfortable with fading rallies above $74 must now reassess, while momentum buyers who were waiting for confirmation now have a basis for their decisions. On-chain indicators also suggest the same trend. For instance, the number of coins held in wallets linked to centralized exchanges has dropped to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant, indicating continued investor accumulation that could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange noted that the shrinking supply of Bitcoin on exchanges, with fewer coins available for sale and more BTC being moved to long-term holders, is resulting in increased scarcity and potential volatility. However, QCP Capital is advising caution due to the persistent relative richness of Bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used as a hedge against potential price drops. The firm added that crypto trends currently seem tied to the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after bouncing back from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks persist due to the proliferation of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million just days after the KelpDAO event.
