Bitcoin is currently trading with a positive trajectory above the $75,000 mark, a level previously identified by CoinDesk as pivotal for bulls to maintain their grip on the market. However, some analysts are urging caution, emphasizing the need for prices to remain above this threshold through Wednesday, when the US-Iran ceasefire is set to expire. The market is bracing for two possible outcomes: an extension and de-escalation, or renewed escalation and increased oil prices.
According to analysts at Marex, this uncertainty poses a significant headline risk with a timer. If the conflict escalates, oil prices could surge beyond the March high of $119, potentially leading to a downturn in Asian and global equity markets. The question remains whether bitcoin will continue to show resilience or succumb to pressure alongside the broader market.
As of now, no Iranian delegation has departed for talks in Pakistan, and President Donald Trump has warned of a significant escalation if the ceasefire ends without a deal. Another key event on the horizon is Kevin Warsh's nomination hearing for Federal Reserve chair, scheduled for Tuesday. Warsh, known for his hawkish stance on inflation, could significantly impact markets with his remarks, particularly if they reinforce expectations of policy easing. In the broader cryptocurrency market, major players like ether, solana, and XRP have seen modest gains of less than 2% over the past 24 hours, underperforming bitcoin.
However, smaller tokens such as XLM and TON have seen significant increases of over 5% each, with the CoinDesk Memecoin Index rising by over 3%. Notably, the DeFi Select Index added 2%, despite the industry-wide fallout from the weekend's KelpDAO hack, which saw the attacker drain rsETH, a widely used collateral token on several DeFi platforms. Decentralized lender Aave has been heavily impacted, with its total value of locked crypto assets falling to $16 billion, a decline of nearly $10 billion since before the hack.
Aave's native token, AAVE, has plummeted 18% to $93, while open interest in futures tied to the token has hit a record high, indicating potential for increased volatility ahead.
