Bitcoin's Quantum Conundrum: A Countdown to Preventing a 6.9 Million BTC Heist

While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum attacks, the ownership of coins is at risk due to the type of mathematics used to secure wallets. A quantum computer can potentially break this math, allowing an attacker to drain wallets. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, including those held by the network's creator Satoshi Nakamoto, are exposed and at risk. The Taproot upgrade has further expanded the problem by publishing public keys for any spent bitcoin, making them vulnerable to quantum attacks. Although there are proposals to address this issue, such as adding quantum-safe address types or installing a detection system, none have gained broad support from bitcoin's core developers. The lack of a formal governance process and funding for engineering work hinders bitcoin's ability to coordinate a solution, unlike Ethereum, which has a formal quantum-resistant program in place. The biggest challenge lies in making decisions that the network has historically avoided, such as freezing old address formats or allowing exposed coins to move to new quantum-safe addresses. With the quantum threat looming, developers must decide whether to start working on a solution now or wait until the threat becomes more apparent, which might be too late.
