Hundreds of Millions Pledged in Rescue Effort for Aave Users Following Massive Crypto Hack
The world of decentralized finance has come together in an unprecedented show of unity following a massive crypto hack, with industry leaders committing hundreds of millions to a rescue plan for Aave users. Aave, a leading lending protocol in DeFi, has been at the center of a broad recovery effort after losses tied to the Kelp DAO exploit. The effort, dubbed 'DeFi United,' has raised around $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital still pending governance approval. The exploit, which affected rsETH markets and created risk across lending positions on Aave, has prompted a coordinated industry response. Aave Labs has outlined a plan for the DAO to allocate up to 250,000 ETH as part of the recovery, while founder Stani Kulechov has pledged to donate 5,000 ETH personally. Other contributors, including Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, have also stepped in with significant commitments. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys and its founder Joseph Lubin committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Sharplink has played a strategic advisory role in the discussions. Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle have also proposed contributions, including a 2,500 stETH allocation, a 5,000 ETH plan, and a 30,000 ETH credit facility loan. Compound has proposed giving up to 3,000 ETH to the fund. Other entities, such as Babylon Foundation, Renzo, Circle Ventures, Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun, have also made deposits or commitments. The list of participants continues to grow, with Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, and Ink Foundation, alongside Tyro, also contributing. Aave Labs has put forward a proposal asking Arbitrum governance to approve the release of roughly 30,765.67 ETH immobilized by the network's Security Council into the coordinated remediation effort. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, but the breadth of participation underscores the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi.
