Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Risks of AI Control by Major Tech Companies
The cryptocurrency space is on the cusp of a significant transformation driven by artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a conversation with CoinDesk, Lubin emphasized that autonomous agents can interact, coordinate, and verify transactions on decentralized networks, leveraging crypto infrastructure for machine-driven activities. He also expressed support for the idea that blockchain technology is well-suited for machine intelligences, but does not envision humans being replaced. Instead, increasingly sophisticated interfaces will simplify complexity, enabling users to interact with crypto systems through intent-based interactions, with AI serving as an intermediary layer between people and protocols. However, Lubin warned that if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among a few large tech firms, it could pose significant risks. He stressed the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to operate in transparent, verifiable environments. The evolution of products like MetaMask, a Consensys offering, reflects this broader shift. Lubin described the wallet as being rebuilt as a 'personal money operating system' that users own and control, allowing AI-powered agents to manage assets, execute transactions, and navigate the growing decentralized economy. Lubin also noted that corporate chains on Ethereum are becoming more common as institutions seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. While he expects assets to be issued on Ethereum's base layer for optimal durability, he also acknowledged the growth of stablecoins as a stepping stone toward more fully decentralized financial systems. Ultimately, Lubin envisions a convergence of traditional finance and decentralized finance, resulting in a more granular and programmable global economy. When addressing the topic of quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for this potential risk for years and view it as part of the natural evolution of the Ethereum ecosystem.
