Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty

The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible, as a researcher has successfully broken a 15-bit elliptic curve key, a crucial component of cryptographic security. This achievement has earned Giancarlo Lelli a 1 bitcoin bounty, valued at approximately $78,000, from quantum security startup Project Eleven. The breakthrough is considered the largest public demonstration of its kind, with implications for the security of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, which enables crypto wallets to prove fund ownership without revealing private keys, is vulnerable to quantum computer attacks using Shor's algorithm. Although Lelli's result is significant, it does not pose an immediate threat to Bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security. The achievement is, however, a notable step forward in the development of quantum attacks, with the search space increasing by a factor of 512 in just seven months. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's result has expanded this by a substantial margin. Theoretical resource estimates for a full 256-bit attack have also decreased dramatically, with a recent Google Research paper suggesting the cost could be below 500,000 physical qubits. This rapid progress has significant implications for the security of wallets with publicly visible keys, with approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, or one-third of the total supply, potentially at risk. In response, Bitcoin developers have proposed migration paths, including the introduction of quantum-safe address types, while other cryptocurrencies, such as Ethereum and Ripple, have also published post-quantum transition plans.
