DeFi Industry Unites to Support Aave Users After Massive Crypto Hack with Hundreds of Millions in Rescue Plan
In the world of decentralized finance, crises often expose underlying weaknesses, but the recent response to the Kelp DAO exploit has revealed a surprising level of cooperation. Aave, a major lending protocol, is at the center of a broad recovery effort following significant losses, with capital and credit commitments pouring in from across the industry. Dubbed 'DeFi United,' the effort has secured around $303 million in commitments, although much of this capital is still pending governance approval. The exploit, which affected rsETH markets and created risk across lending positions on Aave, has prompted a coordinated industry response. Aave Labs and other key players are working together to allocate funds, with Aave's founder, Stani Kulechov, donating 5,000 ETH personally. Other contributors include Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, among others. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys and its founder, Joseph Lubin, committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Sharplink has played a strategic advisory role in the discussions. The effort has also drawn smaller contributions from the community, including proposals from Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle. Entities such as Babylon Foundation, Renzo, and Circle Ventures are making deposits into Aave, while others like Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun are also contributing. The list of participants continues to grow, with entities like Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, and Ink Foundation involved. The contributions are structured in different ways, including grants, deposits, and credit lines, highlighting varying approaches to balancing support with risk management. In parallel, Aave Labs has proposed the release of roughly 30,765.67 ETH immobilized by Arbitrum's Security Council to support affected rsETH holders. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, but the breadth of participation underscores the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi.
