A quantum algorithm known as Shor's can collapse the time it takes to break this math, and recent research suggests this could be achieved with fewer resources than previously thought. The bitcoin network's lack of formal governance and its reliance on decentralized decision-making may hinder its ability to implement effective solutions. Ethereum, another major cryptocurrency, has had a formal quantum-resistant program in place since 2018 and is actively working on migrating to quantum-safe security. Bitcoin developers have proposed various solutions, but none have gained broad support. The coordination problem in implementing a solution is significant, as it requires decisions that the network has historically avoided. The window to respond to the quantum threat may be closing, and the question remains whether the bitcoin network can coordinate a major security upgrade before it's too late.
