Canadian Crypto Donation Ban Gains Momentum with Conservative Support

A proposed ban on cryptocurrency donations in Canadian politics has taken a significant step forward, gaining cross-party support and passing the second reading in the House of Commons. The Strong and Free Elections Act, also known as Bill C-25, aims to prohibit crypto donations, along with other difficult-to-trace funding methods, and will now proceed to committee for further review. The legislation seeks to apply the ban across the federal system, including registered parties, electoral district associations, and third-party advertisers. Recipients of illegal crypto donations will be required to return or remit them within 30 days. The bill's progress comes after Canada's Chief Electoral Officer recommended a ban on crypto donations in 2022, citing concerns over pseudo-anonymity and the difficulty of verifying contributor identities. The move is in contrast to the US, which has permitted crypto donations since 2014, and differs from the UK, which recently passed a law banning crypto donations due to concerns over foreign money in politics. Despite initial concerns from Conservative lawmakers, the issue of crypto donations did not become a central point of contention, and the bill has been sent to committee with their support.
