Sam Altman's World Project Unveils Significant Upgrade to Combat Deepfakes and Bots

The World digital identity project, backed by Sam Altman, has announced its most substantial upgrade to date, introducing a 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure designed for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This overhaul aims to address growing concerns over bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online, with a focus on authentication, payments, and internet services. Altman is also known for his work on OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other large language model AI platforms. The World system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for facial and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. This code is then anonymized and sent across a distributed network to confirm the user's unique identity without revealing personal data. Critics have raised concerns about the use of biometric scanning via the Orb. The update features a redesigned architecture focused on improving privacy, security, and usability, with new features including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced, allowing users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms seamlessly. World is expanding its partnerships with consumer platforms like Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and is introducing tools like 'Concert Kit' to combat scalper bots. The company is also working with Zoom on a 'Deep Face' feature to verify meeting participants' identities and with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements. Additionally, World is rolling out 'AgentKit' to enable developers to attach human-verified credentials to agents, facilitating sensitive actions and agent-based commerce. The company aims to establish a trust layer for automated workflows without requiring personal data, working with firms like Okta, Vercel, and Browserbase. According to Sam Altman, co-founder of World, 'World ID is on the path to becoming a real human network for the internet.'
