Ethereum Co-Founder Warns of AI Risks and Highlights Blockchain's Future
The next significant milestone for the crypto industry will be driven by advancements in artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, the CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a recent conversation, Lubin emphasized that autonomous agents can leverage decentralized networks and crypto infrastructure to facilitate transactions, coordination, and verification. He expressed support for the concept of blockchain being used for machine intelligences but dismissed the idea that humans will be replaced. Instead, he envisioned increasingly intelligent interfaces simplifying user interactions with crypto systems. However, Lubin cautioned that if AI infrastructure remains under the control of a few large tech firms, it could pose significant risks. Decentralized systems and cryptography will be crucial in ensuring accountability and transparency in AI-driven environments. The evolution of products like MetaMask, a Consensys product, reflects this shift, with the wallet being rebuilt as a user-controlled neobank. AI-powered agents may act on behalf of users, managing assets and executing transactions in a growing decentralized economy. Lubin also discussed the rise of corporate chains on Ethereum, expecting companies to seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. While stablecoins are a rapidly growing sector, Lubin views them as a stepping stone toward more decentralized financial systems. He also touched on the convergence of traditional and decentralized finance, anticipating a more granular and programmable global economy. Regarding long-term technical risks like quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for this eventuality and see it as part of the natural evolution of the platform.
