Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty

The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible with a recent breakthrough. Quantum security startup Project Eleven awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty to Giancarlo Lelli for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement is considered the largest public demonstration of its kind, posing a potential threat to the security of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, which underpins the security of crypto wallets, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from its public counterpart. However, quantum computers running Shor's algorithm can challenge this assumption. Lelli's achievement, while significant, does not immediately compromise Bitcoin's security, as it uses 256-bit elliptic curve security. Nevertheless, the result underscores the need for the development of quantum-safe address types and post-quantum transition plans, which are already being explored by Bitcoin and other blockchain platforms.
