The legislative timeline is critical, as the current guidance from the Securities and Exchange Commission is not permanent and may be subject to change. The crypto industry seeks to cement its goals and regulations into law, making it more challenging for future administrations to reverse these rules. Without the Clarity Act, the industry may face similar challenges in the years to come. A crucial deadline is approaching on May 25, Memorial Day, which has been considered a 'drop-dead' date for legislative progress since last December. As summer approaches, lawmakers will be preoccupied with their campaigns, leaving little time for crypto legislation. Before Congress adjourns, it must address funding for the Department of Homeland Security and the potential appointment of Kevin Warsh as the next Fed chair. The crypto industry is eager for this bill to pass, with over 100 organizations signing an open letter urging a markup hearing in the Senate Banking Committee. However, it remains unclear when the committee will move forward, as outstanding issues such as stablecoin yield and decentralized finance remain unresolved. Even after these issues are addressed, the House will need to vote on the bill again. According to Congressman French Hill, who chairs the House Financial Services Committee, many of the outstanding issues have already been resolved by the House in its version of the bill, which should facilitate the Senate's progress.
