Jane Street Seeks Dismissal of Terraform Lawsuit Over UST-LUNA Collapse
Jane Street has filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought by the Terraform Labs bankruptcy estate, denying allegations that it played a role in the 2022 collapse of the TerraUSD stablecoin and its sister token, Luna. In a filing to the Southern District of New York, Jane Street argued that the case is an attempt to deflect blame for the failure of the Terra ecosystem, which resulted in approximately $40 billion in losses. The firm is seeking to have the complaint dismissed with prejudice, which would prevent Terraform from pursuing the same claims in the future. Jane Street maintained that the issues surrounding Terra's collapse have already been resolved in court, citing the criminal and civil cases against Terraform founder Do Kwon, who has been convicted of conspiracy and wire fraud and is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence. The firm also pointed to Kwon's admission of being 'alone responsible for everyone's pain.' Terraform's lawsuit, filed by administrator Todd Snyder in January, accuses Jane Street of insider trading, alleging that the firm used confidential information from Terraform insiders to trade ahead of major market moves. However, Jane Street disputes this narrative, denying any involvement in the collapse and stating that Terraform's 'fraud scheme' has already been prosecuted, adjudicated, and punished. The court's decision on Jane Street's motion could have significant implications for the assignment of responsibility for the collapse of the Terra ecosystem, which has had far-reaching consequences for the crypto sector.
