Sam Altman's World Project Unveils Significant Upgrade to Combat Deepfakes and Bots
The World digital identity project, backed by Sam Altman, has announced its most substantial upgrade to date for World ID, positioning it as a comprehensive 'proof of human' infrastructure for individuals, businesses, and AI agents. This significant overhaul aims to address growing concerns within the tech industry about bots, deepfakes, and AI impersonating humans online by bolstering authentication, payment, and internet services. Altman is also known for his involvement in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other large language model AI platforms. World's system utilizes custom 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for face and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. The company ensures that images are deleted post-processing, with only anonymized code fragments being distributed across a network to verify the user's uniqueness without compromising their identity or personal data. Critics have raised concerns about the use of biometric scanning. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on enhanced privacy, security, and usability, including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced to allow users to manage their credentials and authenticate across various platforms seamlessly. World is expanding its integrations with consumer platforms such as Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and is introducing 'Concert Kit' to combat scalper bots in ticket reservations. Partnerships with Razer, Mythical Games, and a potential collaboration with Reddit for bot detection are also underway. On the enterprise side, World is working with Zoom on 'Deep Face' to verify meeting participants' humanity and with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements. The company aims to establish a trust layer for automated workflows without requiring personal data through new tooling like 'AgentKit'. Sam Altman expressed his vision for World ID to become a real human network for the internet.
