Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The price of Bitcoin, currently at $76,910.55, has surpassed $78,000, resulting in a boost for the broader cryptocurrency market. This development comes on the heels of improved risk sentiment following U.S. President Donald Trump's extension of the ceasefire with Iran, which also led to gains in stock index futures. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000 in March and early April, Bitcoin's upward trend has finally given momentum traders the confirmation they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically buy when an upward trend is confirmed, and Bitcoin's recent breakout could attract more buyers, thereby increasing momentum. According to analysts at Marex, the market's breakout from the $65 to $75 range is significant as it changes market behavior, with sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 now needing to reassess. On-chain indicators also suggest continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. For instance, the number of coins held in wallets tied to centralized exchanges has dropped to a multiyear low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests that Bitcoin is becoming increasingly scarce, which could lead to increased volatility. However, QCP Capital has urged caution, citing the persistent relative richness of Bitcoin put options on Deribit, which could indicate a potential price drop. The firm also noted that crypto trends are currently tied to the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having bounced back from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million just days after the KelpDAO event.
