North Korea's Cryptocurrency Theft Tactics Are Evolving, with DeFi Being a Prime Target

Barely three weeks after North Korea-linked hackers used social engineering to breach the crypto trading firm Drift, hackers with ties to the nation seem to have executed another significant exploit, this time targeting Kelp. The attack on Kelp, a restaking protocol integrated into LayerZero's cross-chain infrastructure, signifies an evolution in the tactics employed by North Korea-linked hackers. They are no longer just seeking out bugs or stolen credentials but are exploiting the fundamental assumptions underlying decentralized systems. The combined incidents of Drift and Kelp suggest a more organized effort than isolated hacks, as North Korea escalates its attempts to hijack funds from the crypto sector. According to Alexander Urbelis, Chief Information Security Officer and General Counsel at ENS Labs, "This is not a series of incidents; it is a cadence. You cannot patch your way out of a procurement schedule." More than $500 million was siphoned off through the Drift and Kelp exploits in just over two weeks. The breach of Kelp did not involve breaking encryption or cracking keys; instead, attackers manipulated the data feeding into the system, forcing it to rely on compromised inputs and approve transactions that never occurred. The security failure is attributed to the system's design, where it checked the authorship of the message but not the truth of the message itself. This exploit highlights the issue of configuration choices, with Kelp relying on a single verifier to approve cross-chain messages, a choice that, while faster and simpler, removes a critical safety layer. The aftermath has led to recommendations for using multiple independent verifiers to approve transactions, akin to requiring multiple signatures on a bank transfer. The incident exposes a gap between the marketing of decentralization and its actual implementation, with a single verifier not being truly decentralized. Decentralization is seen as a series of choices, and the stack is only as strong as its most centralized layer. The attack on Kelp and the subsequent fallout have wider implications, affecting lending platforms like Aave that accepted impacted assets as collateral, thus turning a single exploit into a broader stress event. The shift in targets towards cross-chain and restaking infrastructure, which are critical but complex and hold large amounts of value, may explain the recent targeting by Lazarus. These layers, often less visible and harder to monitor, are becoming attractive targets.
