Quantum Computing Threat Looms Large for Crypto, Experts Warn

The cryptocurrency industry has been put on notice: while current blockchains are secure, the advent of a powerful quantum computer poses a significant threat to widely used encryption methods. A new report, commissioned by Coinbase and authored by a team of independent experts, urges the industry to begin preparations for this eventuality. The report cautions that the timeline for the development of a fault-tolerant quantum computer is uncertain, but it is clearly on the horizon. Major crypto ecosystems, such as Ethereum and Solana, have already started exploring solutions, including the development of quantum-resistant digital signatures and wallet designs. However, the transition to quantum-resistant cryptography will be complex and time-consuming, requiring significant upgrades to blockchains, wallets, and exchanges. The report recommends a flexible approach, allowing for a rapid upgrade to quantum-resistant cryptography when needed, while avoiding sacrifices to current security or performance. With the US National Institute of Standards and Technology recommending migration to quantum-resistant cryptography by 2035, the industry is advised to take proactive steps to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing.
