The Rise of AI-Driven Crypto Payments: A New Era for Online Transactions

The increasing use of AI agents is revolutionizing online payment systems, with crypto infrastructure playing a key role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was previously impossible is now feasible due to advancements in autonomous AI systems, which require native transaction methods. As AI agents evolve, the demand for 'agentic payments' is growing, enabling these systems to autonomously pay for services such as data access and travel bookings. Pollak believes that x402, an open-source payments protocol developed by Coinbase and collaborators including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be crucial in facilitating on-demand API payments without traditional billing systems. This protocol allows for instant, low-cost global transactions via blockchain-based payments. With approximately $48 million in payment volume already processed through x402, mostly on the Ethereum layer-2 network Base, the ecosystem is expanding rapidly. The long-term goal is to create an open marketplace where agents can access services programmatically without human intervention. While fully autonomous businesses are emerging, Pollak predicts that the near-term impact will come from individuals using AI to enhance their performance. The key to widespread crypto adoption, he argues, lies not in marketing but in making the technology invisible to users.
