The perceived threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible, as a researcher has successfully broken a 15-bit elliptic curve key, a crucial component of the underlying technology. This achievement, made possible by independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli, has earned him a 1 bitcoin bounty, valued at approximately $78,000. The breakthrough is considered the largest public demonstration of its kind, with implications for the security of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, which enables crypto wallets to verify fund ownership without revealing private keys, is vulnerable to quantum computer attacks utilizing Shor's algorithm.
