World Project Unveils Significant Upgrade to Combat Deepfakes and Bots

The World project, backed by Sam Altman, has introduced its most substantial upgrade to World ID, a 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure designed for individuals, enterprises, and AI agents. This overhaul aims to address growing concerns over bots and deepfakes impersonating humans online. The system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for face and iris scans to generate a unique cryptographic code. The images are deleted after processing, and only anonymized fragments of the code are sent across a distributed network to confirm the person's uniqueness. The result is a credential that verifies someone's humanity without revealing their identity or personal data. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on improved privacy, security, and usability, including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced to allow users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms seamlessly. The company is expanding its partnerships with various platforms, including Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and Zoom, where a 'Deep Face' feature verifies meeting participants' humanity. Additionally, World is working with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements and rolling out tooling like 'AgentKit' to enable developers to attach human-verified credentials to agents for sensitive actions and commerce.
