Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty for Achieving Largest Quantum Attack on Underlying Technology

The potential quantum threat to Bitcoin's security has become more tangible after a researcher successfully broke a 15-bit elliptic curve key. Quantum security startup Project Eleven awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty to Giancarlo Lelli for achieving this milestone. The attack, made possible by publicly accessible quantum hardware, demonstrates a significant leap in the capabilities of quantum computers. Elliptic curve cryptography is a fundamental component of Bitcoin's security, enabling wallets to prove control over funds without revealing private keys. However, quantum computers can potentially exploit this using Shor's algorithm, posing a threat to the security of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Lelli's achievement does not immediately compromise Bitcoin's security, as it uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, but it highlights the rapid progress being made in quantum computing. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's result expanded this by a factor of 512 in just seven months. As the resource requirements for such attacks continue to drop, the barrier to running them in practice is also decreasing. This development has significant implications for wallets with public keys already visible on-chain, with approximately 6.9 million bitcoin potentially at risk. In response, Bitcoin developers have proposed migration paths, including the introduction of quantum-safe address types, to mitigate this threat.
