A significant development occurred in Belgium earlier this year when KBC, the country's largest bank-insurance group, enabled regulated Bitcoin and Ether trading for retail investors through its self-directed brokerage platform, Bolero. What's notable is not just that a major European bank has provided access to digital assets, but how it was done - within an existing regulated platform, as part of the broader financial environment customers already use.

This approach indicates the direction the market is heading. For nearly a decade, banks have approached digital assets with caution, often treating them as separate from core banking services due to concerns around custody, governance, compliance, and operational resilience. However, with the introduction of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), institutions are now evaluating digital assets as capabilities that can be integrated into their existing control environment, rather than as a separate category. MiCA has simplified the regulatory landscape, allowing banks to offer digital asset services under the same framework as securities.

This has sparked a shift in strategy, with banks like BBVA, DZ Bank, and Société Générale integrating digital assets into their existing infrastructure. The result is a change in market structure, with trust shifting towards traditional financial institutions, the customer relationship remaining with the bank, and the scope expanding beyond trading to include payments and settlements.

As banks begin to issue tokenized deposits and integrate stablecoin capabilities into their payment rails, the competitive dynamics of digital payments are shifting. The key question is no longer technological, but rather distributional - which institutions can offer digital assets seamlessly, at scale, and across various financial products.

This shift is likely to be driven by a combination of in-house development and strategic acquisitions, as banks seek to build or acquire the necessary infrastructure to support digital asset services.
