Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights Potential Dangers of AI Control by Major Tech Firms

The cryptocurrency sector is on the verge of its next significant turning point, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a recent conversation with CoinDesk, Lubin emphasized the potential of autonomous and semi-autonomous agents to facilitate transactions, coordination, and verification on decentralized networks, utilizing cryptocurrency infrastructure as the foundation for machine-driven activities. Lubin, who is set to speak at Consensus Miami 2026, expressed his support for the concept that blockchain technology is particularly suited for machine intelligences, but does not envision humans being replaced. Instead, he foresees increasingly sophisticated interfaces that will simplify complexity, allowing users to interact with cryptocurrency systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as an intermediary layer between people and protocols. However, this vision also carries risks, as Lubin cautioned that if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among a few large technology companies, it could pose significant problems. He stressed the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to verify each other's actions in transparent environments. Products like MetaMask, a Consensys offering, are evolving to reflect this shift, with Lubin describing the wallet as a 'new kind of neobank that you own and control,' part of a transition toward a 'personal money operating system.' AI-powered agents could potentially act on behalf of users, managing assets and executing transactions within a growing decentralized economy. The rise of corporate chains on the Ethereum network is another significant development, with Lubin anticipating that companies will seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. He believes that assets are best issued on Ethereum's base layer to ensure durability, even if they are later utilized across other networks. Stablecoins, which are among the fastest-growing sectors in cryptocurrency, are a stepping stone toward more fully decentralized financial systems, but not the ultimate goal. Lubin views them as a temporary solution, noting that current models rely heavily on centralized issuers. Over time, he expects the growth of decentralized collateral to enable more robust, crypto-native forms of money. Regarding tokenization, Lubin suggested that traditional finance and decentralized finance are converging, combining centuries of financial innovation with newer blockchain-based systems. This convergence is expected to result in a more granular and programmable global economy. While addressing longer-term technical risks like quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for this eventuality for years and view it as a natural part of the network's evolution.
