Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Sounds Alarm on AI Control by Tech Giants
According to Consensys CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin, the next significant milestone for crypto is the integration of artificial intelligence. Lubin notes that autonomous agents can conduct transactions and verify each other on decentralized networks, utilizing crypto as the foundation for machine-driven activities. He believes that increasingly intelligent interfaces will simplify complexity, enabling users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as an intermediary between people and protocols. However, Lubin warns that if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among large tech firms, it could pose significant risks. Decentralized systems and cryptography will be crucial in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to verify each other in transparent environments. Products like MetaMask are evolving to reflect this shift, with Lubin describing it as a 'new kind of neobank' that users own and control. AI-powered agents could manage assets, execute transactions, and navigate the growing decentralized economy. Lubin also discussed the rise of corporate chains on Ethereum, expecting companies to seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. He believes that assets are best issued on Ethereum's base layer for durability. Stablecoins are seen as a stepping stone toward more decentralized financial systems, with Lubin expecting growth in decentralized collateral to enable more robust forms of money. On tokenization, Lubin suggests that traditional finance and decentralized finance are converging, combining centuries of financial innovation with newer blockchain-based systems. While Lubin acknowledges the risks of quantum computing, he believes Ethereum developers have been preparing for years and sees it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
