The Future of Crypto Payments: How AI Agents Are Revolutionizing Online Transactions

The swift growth of AI agents is transforming the online payment landscape, with crypto infrastructure poised to play a pivotal role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was previously unfeasible is now achievable due to the rapid advancement of autonomous AI systems, which require native transaction capabilities. As AI agents evolve, the need for seamless, software-based transactions is becoming increasingly apparent. Pollak, who will be speaking at Consensus Miami 2026, believes that the open-source x402 payments protocol, developed in collaboration with companies like Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be a crucial component of this emerging ecosystem. This protocol enables on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems, allowing for instant, low-cost global transactions. With approximately $48 million in payment volume already processed through x402, mostly on the Ethereum layer-2 network Base, the ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations across AI providers, data platforms, and travel services. The long-term goal is to create an open marketplace where agents can access services programmatically, without human intervention. While fully autonomous businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak predicts that the near-term impact will come from individuals leveraging AI to enhance their performance. The key challenge for crypto remains adoption, which Pollak believes can be addressed by making crypto invisible, allowing users to experience its benefits without needing to be aware of it.
