Strategy Surpasses BlackRock's IBIT in Bitcoin Holdings Following Strategic Purchases

Following a significant purchase, Strategy (MSTR) has surpassed BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) in bitcoin holdings, now owning $77,734.26 worth of BTC. This shift marks the first time MSTR has led IBIT since Q2 2024. The company's latest acquisition of 34,164 BTC brings its total holdings to 815,061 BTC, exceeding IBIT's 802,824 BTC by over 12,000. Although the difference may not be substantial in relative terms, it holds symbolic importance considering IBIT's rapid growth since its launch. Notably, IBIT became the fastest ETF to reach $70 billion in assets and is among BlackRock's top revenue drivers. The two entities differ fundamentally, with Strategy being an operating company that utilizes financial engineering to accumulate bitcoin in a leveraged manner, and IBIT being a spot ETF that passively tracks bitcoin's price without leverage or corporate risk. Strategy's leveraged structure has driven a 250% increase, while IBIT has seen a 55% gain since its listing in January 2024. Strategy accelerated its accumulation during the market downturn, adding nearly 80,000 BTC in 2026, funded partly by its perpetual preferred equity, a key differentiator.
