Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal

The bitcoin price, currently at $77,734.26, has surpassed $78,000, resulting in a positive impact on the broader cryptocurrency market. This development follows an improvement in risk sentiment after the US President extended the ceasefire with Iran, also leading to gains in stock index futures. The cryptocurrency's upward movement marks the end of a period of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, providing momentum traders with the confirmation they had been waiting for. Momentum traders typically invest when an upward trend is evident, and bitcoin's recent breakout is a clear indication of this. As a result, more buyers may enter the market, further fueling the momentum. Analysts at Marex note that the market had been confined to a range of $65 to $75 for months, and breaking out of this range is significant as it alters market behavior. Sellers who had been comfortable selling during rallies above $74 must now reassess their strategy. On-chain indicators also suggest a similar trend, with the number of coins held in wallets tied to centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This indicates continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. However, QCP Capital urges caution, citing the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit. The firm notes that crypto trends are currently tied to the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks. The Sui-based Volo protocol was recently drained of over $3 million, just days after the KelpDAO event caused collateral damage across the sector. Bitcoin's price has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is a significant development as the 100-day average had previously capped the bounce in January. Now, the focus shifts to the 200-day average, currently positioned at $85,900.
