World, a digital identity initiative backed by Sam Altman, has introduced a substantial upgrade to its World ID system, positioning it as a comprehensive 'proof of human' infrastructure for individuals, enterprises, and AI agents. The upgrade, announced in San Francisco, aims to address growing concerns over bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. Altman is also known for his involvement in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. The World ID system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for face and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. The images are deleted after processing, and only anonymized code fragments are shared across a distributed network to verify the user's uniqueness without revealing their identity or personal data. Critics have raised concerns about the use of biometric scanning via the Orb. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on enhanced privacy, security, and usability, with new features including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app, currently in beta, will allow users to manage their credentials and authenticate across platforms, aiming to make proof-of-human identity as seamless as social media login. The company is introducing various integrations to embed its identity layer across consumer platforms, including partnerships with Tinder, Zoom, and Docusign. These integrations include a 'verified human' badge for Tinder users and a 'Concert Kit' to combat scalper bots. World is also working with Razer, Mythical Games, and Reddit on gaming and online community partnerships, and with Zoom on a 'Deep Face' feature to verify meeting participants' humanity. Additionally, the company is collaborating with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements and rolling out 'AgentKit' to enable developers to attach human-verified credentials to agents, facilitating sensitive actions and agent-based commerce. The company is working with firms like Okta, Vercel, and Browserbase on these capabilities, aiming to establish a trust layer for automated workflows without requiring personal data.
