Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Risks of AI Control by Major Tech Firms

The next significant turning point for the crypto industry is expected to come from advancements in artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a recent interview, Lubin noted that autonomous agents can perform transactions, coordinate, and verify each other on decentralized networks, utilizing crypto as the foundation for machine-driven activities. He believes that humans will not be replaced, but rather, increasingly intelligent interfaces will simplify complexity, allowing users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as an intermediary layer between people and protocols. However, Lubin warned that if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among a few large tech firms, it could pose significant risks. Decentralized systems and cryptography will be crucial in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to transparently verify each other. Products like MetaMask are evolving to reflect this change, with Lubin describing it as a "new kind of neobank" that users own and control, part of a transition toward a personal financial operating system. AI-powered agents could manage assets, execute transactions, and navigate the growing decentralized economy on behalf of users. The rise of corporate chains on Ethereum is also expected, with Lubin pointing to structural changes across the ecosystem. He believes that assets are best issued on Ethereum's base layer to ensure durability, even if they are later used across other networks. Stablecoins are seen as a stepping stone toward more decentralized financial systems, with Lubin expecting growth in decentralized collateral to enable more robust forms of crypto-native money. On tokenization, Lubin suggests that traditional finance and decentralized finance are converging, combining centuries of financial innovation with newer blockchain-based systems. This convergence is expected to result in a more granular and programmable global economy. Regarding quantum computing, Lubin struck a measured tone, stating that while it is not an immediate concern, Ethereum developers have been preparing for it for years and see it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
