Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty

The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible with a recent breakthrough. Independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli has been awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement is considered the largest public demonstration of its kind, with implications for the security of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. The bounty, worth approximately $78,000, was awarded by quantum security startup Project Eleven. Lelli's feat involved deriving a private encryption key from its public counterpart, a process that is supposed to be impossible in practical terms. Elliptic curve cryptography is the foundation of crypto wallet security, enabling wallets to prove control over funds without revealing private keys. However, quantum computers running Shor's algorithm pose a challenge to this assumption. Although Lelli's result does not mean Bitcoin is on the verge of being compromised, as it uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, the achievement highlights the rapid progress being made in quantum attacks. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's 15-bit result marks a 512-fold increase in just seven months. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resource requirements for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing, with a recent Google Research paper putting the cost below 500,000 physical qubits. This development has significant implications for wallets with public keys already visible on-chain, with approximately 6.9 million Bitcoin at risk. In response, Bitcoin developers have proposed migration paths, including the introduction of quantum-safe address types.
