Trump Administration's DOJ Drops Investigation, Paving Way for Federal Reserve Nominee
The US Department of Justice, led by the Trump administration, has dropped its investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, potentially clearing the path for the confirmation of President Trump's nominee, Kevin Warsh, to take over as Fed chair. Warsh, who has significant personal wealth, including cryptocurrency assets, has been awaiting a Senate vote after a confirmation hearing. The DOJ's decision to halt its investigation, which was related to cost overruns in a Fed building project, could now allow the Senate to move forward with Warsh's confirmation. Republican Senator Thom Tillis had previously stated that he would block Warsh's confirmation as long as the DOJ's investigation into Powell was ongoing. The investigation has been passed to the Fed's inspector general, who will issue a report. This development could grant Trump greater influence over US monetary policy and provide him with more allies on the Fed board, particularly in relation to the regulation of the crypto industry and stablecoin issuers. Senator Elizabeth Warren, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee, has dismissed the move, describing it as an attempt to facilitate the confirmation of Warsh, who she claims is a 'sock puppet' for President Trump. Warren also noted that the administration is still pursuing a court case against Fed Governor Lisa Cook.
