FTX Founder Withdraws Retrial Request Due to Fairness Concerns

Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX, has withdrawn his motion for a retrial due to concerns that he would not receive a fair hearing. Bankman-Fried, who is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence for fraud and conspiracy related to the collapse of FTX in 2022, indicated that he may refile the motion after the decision on his direct appeal and a related request for reassignment have been made. The motion for a new trial was initially filed by his mother, Barbara Fried, who claimed that new evidence would warrant a retrial. Bankman-Fried stated that he drafted the motion himself while in detention, with some assistance from his lawyers and family members. He clarified that although he sought input from his lawyers and parents, he was the primary author of the letter to the judge. The appeal is currently pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, where his attorney, Alexandra Shapiro, argued that the trial was unfair due to limitations on the evidence Bankman-Fried could present to the jury.
