Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Envisions AI Agents as the Future of Crypto Payments
According to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase, the rapid advancement of AI agents is revolutionizing online transactions, with crypto infrastructure emerging as a natural fit. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that capabilities once deemed impossible just nine months prior are now achievable due to the accelerating development of autonomous AI systems. As these agents continue to evolve, the need for native transaction methods has become apparent. Pollak emphasized that AI agents, being software-defined, require software-based financial transactions. This shift has sparked interest in "agentic payments," where AI systems can autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his hope that the x402 open-source payments protocol, developed by Coinbase and collaborators including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will play a key role in this transition. The x402 protocol enables on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make global transactions instantly and nearly free of charge, according to Pollak. Early adoption is already evident, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having flowed through X402 to date, primarily on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations spanning AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can access directly. Pollak's long-term vision involves creating an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without human intervention or paywalls. While fully autonomous "zero-human" businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes the near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting themselves with AI. He described a future where top performers utilize agents to enhance their performance, powered by multiple parallel AI systems. However, the broader challenge for crypto remains adoption, which Pollak argues can be addressed not through better marketing, but by making crypto more invisible and seamless to use. The goal is to make crypto so integral to the user experience that it becomes unnecessary to explicitly market it, allowing users to simply experience its benefits.
