Ethereum Experiences Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions

The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has just achieved its busiest quarter on record, with its native token's price remaining relatively stable. According to Artemis data, the network's base layer processed 200.4 million transactions in Q1 2026, a significant increase from the 90 million transactions recorded in 2023 and the 100-120 million transactions seen in 2024. Ethereum's smart contract blockchain is a decentralized system that enables the automatic execution of agreements without the need for intermediaries, with transactions being securely recorded on the blockchain. The recent surge in activity can be attributed to the growth of Layer 2s and stablecoins, which have led to increased transaction counts. Despite this growth, Ethereum's native token, ether, has experienced a significant decline in value, presenting a potential opportunity for traders. The majority of transactions are taking place on Layer 2s, which are separate networks built on top of Ethereum, offering cheaper transaction fees. Stablecoins are also being widely used on the Ethereum network, with the total supply reaching a record $180 billion. While this growth is positive, some analysts have raised concerns that Layer 2 activity may be masking base-layer fee pressure, highlighting the need for continued monitoring of the network's activity and transaction fees.
