Crypto Industry Warned to Prepare for Quantum Computing Threat
A newly released report, commissioned by Coinbase, cautions the crypto industry about the looming threat of quantum computing, which could potentially break current encryption methods. Although today's blockchains are still secure, the report stresses that the advent of a fault-tolerant quantum computer is becoming increasingly plausible, and preparation is essential. The 50-page paper, authored by a team of prominent cryptographers and academics, notes that while current quantum machines are not powerful enough to crack cryptography, the industry cannot afford to wait. Google researchers have estimated that a sufficiently advanced quantum computer could break Bitcoin's cryptography, prompting major crypto ecosystems to start developing responses. The Ethereum Foundation has proposed new digital signatures designed to be safe against quantum computers, and Solana is experimenting with quantum-resistant wallet designs. The report emphasizes that current quantum machines are far from powerful enough to pose an immediate threat but warns against complacency. With estimates suggesting that a large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer could be built within a few years to a decade or more, the report advises migrating to quantum-resistant cryptography by 2035. However, the transition will not be easy, as post-quantum digital signatures can be significantly larger than current ones, potentially increasing blockchain data costs and reducing throughput. The report outlines multiple transition strategies, including hybrid systems that combine existing cryptography with post-quantum updates, and recommends flexible approaches that avoid sacrificing current security or performance while enabling a rapid upgrade later.
