This feat earned him a 1 bitcoin bounty, worth approximately $78,000, from quantum security startup Project Eleven. The attack, although not posing an immediate threat to bitcoin, demonstrates the rapid progress being made in quantum computing and its potential impact on the security of cryptocurrencies. Elliptic curve cryptography, which is used to secure bitcoin transactions, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from a public key. However, quantum computers can potentially exploit this using Shor's algorithm, thereby compromising the security of these transactions. Lelli's achievement, while significant, is still far from the 256-bit security used by bitcoin, but it highlights the need for the development of quantum-resistant cryptographic techniques.
