The report notes that major crypto ecosystems, such as the Ethereum Foundation, have already begun developing strategies to counter this threat, including the use of quantum-resistant digital signatures and wallet designs. However, the transition to quantum-resistant cryptography will not be straightforward, with potential challenges including increased blockchain data costs, reduced throughput, and usability issues. The report recommends a flexible approach that balances current security and performance with the need for rapid upgrades in the future. With estimates suggesting that a large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer could be built within the next few years to a decade or more, the report emphasizes that the time to start preparing for this threat is now.
