Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Envisions AI Agents as the Future of Crypto Payments
The emergence of AI agents is revolutionizing online transactions, with crypto infrastructure poised to become a key component. As autonomous AI systems advance, the need for native transaction capabilities is becoming increasingly apparent, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was previously impossible is now feasible due to the rapid evolution of AI agents. As these agents continue to develop, it is clear that they require software-based transaction methods. Pollak, who will be speaking at Consensus Miami 2026, emphasized the importance of "agentic payments," which enable AI systems to autonomously pay for services such as data access, compute, or travel bookings. He believes that the open-source x402 payments protocol, developed by Coinbase and collaborators including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be a vital part of this ecosystem. The x402 protocol facilitates on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems, allowing agents to make global transactions instantly and at minimal cost. Pollak cited early successes, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having been processed through x402 to date, primarily on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations across AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can access directly. The long-term vision is to create an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. Pollak described a system where software can seamlessly discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real-time, allowing agents to "run wild." While fully autonomous "zero-human" businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes that the more significant near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting themselves with AI. Top performers are leveraging agents to enhance their performance, creating workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the crypto industry, the primary challenge remains adoption. Pollak argued that the solution lies not in better marketing but in making crypto invisible, allowing users to experience it without needing to be explicitly aware of it.
