Sam Altman's World Project Unveils Significant Upgrade to Combat Deepfakes and Bots

World, a digital identity initiative backed by Sam Altman, has announced its most substantial upgrade to World ID, a 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure designed for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This overhaul aims to address growing concerns over bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online by bolstering authentication, payments, and internet services. The system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for face and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. The upgrade features a redesigned architecture focusing on improved privacy, security, and usability, with new features such as account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced to allow users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms seamlessly. The company is expanding its partnerships with consumer platforms like Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and is working with Zoom on a 'Deep Face' feature to verify meeting participants' identities. Additionally, World is collaborating with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements and rolling out tooling like 'AgentKit' to enable developers to attach human-verified credentials to agents, facilitating sensitive actions and agent-based commerce.
