Bitcoin's Quantum Conundrum: Can the Network Mitigate the Looming Threat?

While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computing, the ownership of coins is at risk due to the type of math used to protect wallets. A quantum algorithm known as Shor's can potentially collapse the gap between public and private keys, allowing attackers to access coins. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, including those held by Satoshi Nakamoto, are exposed due to their public keys being visible on the blockchain. The 2021 Taproot upgrade inadvertently expanded the problem by publishing keys for any spent bitcoin. Despite the threat, concrete plans have yet to emerge from bitcoin developers, unlike Ethereum, which has a formal quantum-resistant program in place. Various proposals, such as BIP-360 and a detection system from BitMEX Research, have been put forth but lack broad support. The coordination problem lies in bitcoin's governance culture, which treats central authority as a failure mode and makes implementing effective solutions challenging. The network must decide how to migrate the exposed coins, including whether to freeze old address formats or allow coins to move to new quantum-safe addresses. The window to respond may already be closing, and the question remains whether bitcoin can coordinate the necessary security upgrade before it's too late.
