Sam Bankman-Fried Drops Retrial Bid, Citing Fairness Concerns

Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has retracted his motion for a retrial, citing doubts about receiving an impartial hearing. In a letter to the presiding judge, Bankman-Fried expressed concerns that he may not get a fair trial and has decided to wait until his appeal and a related request for reassignment are resolved before potentially renewing the motion. The initial motion for a new trial was submitted by his mother, Barbara Fried, who claimed that newly discovered evidence warranted a retrial. Bankman-Fried, currently serving a 25-year sentence for fraud and conspiracy charges related to FTX's collapse, drafted the motion himself while in detention, with minimal assistance from his lawyers and family members. He may refile the motion after the appeal, currently pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, is decided.
