Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Predicts AI Agents Will Revolutionize Crypto Payments

According to Jesse Pollak, a key figure at Coinbase, the rapid growth of AI agents is transforming the online payment landscape, with crypto infrastructure poised to capitalize on this shift. In a recent interview, Pollak noted that what was previously impossible is now achievable due to the accelerating capabilities of autonomous AI systems. As AI agents continue to evolve, the need for native transaction methods has become apparent. Pollak explained that these agents, defined by software and operating on software, require money in a software format. This development is driving interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his enthusiasm for x402, an open-source payments protocol developed by Coinbase and collaborators like Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, which enables on-demand API payments without traditional subscriptions or billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make single API calls or smart contract calls to transfer money globally, instantly, and virtually free of charge. The x402 protocol has already seen significant traction, with approximately $48 million in payment volume and around 95% of transactions occurring on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations spanning AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can access directly. Pollak's long-term vision involves creating an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. He described a system where software can seamlessly discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real-time. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are emerging, Pollak believes the more significant near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting themselves with AI. Top performers are now utilizing agents to enhance their performance, with workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the crypto industry, the primary challenge remains adoption. Pollak argued that the solution lies not in better marketing but in making crypto invisible to the user. He stated that it will be easier to promote crypto when people can experience it without being aware of it.
