Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Risks of AI Control by Major Tech Companies

The next significant development in the crypto space is expected to come from artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. He explained that autonomous agents can interact and transact on decentralized networks using crypto, with AI serving as the foundation for machine-driven activities. Lubin will be speaking at Consensus Miami 2026, where he will elaborate on his vision for blockchain and AI. He believes that increasingly intelligent interfaces will simplify complexity, allowing users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI acting as an intermediary layer between people and protocols. However, this vision also comes with risks, particularly if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among large tech firms, which could lead to accountability issues. Decentralized systems and cryptography will be essential in ensuring transparency and verifiability. The evolution of products like MetaMask, a Consensys product, reflects this shift, with the wallet being rebuilt as a personal financial system that users own and control. AI-powered agents could manage assets, execute transactions, and navigate the growing decentralized economy. Lubin also discussed the rise of corporate chains on Ethereum, expecting companies to seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. He emphasized that assets are best issued on Ethereum's base layer to ensure durability. Stablecoins are seen as a stepping stone toward more decentralized financial systems, with growth in decentralized collateral expected to enable more robust, crypto-native forms of money. On tokenization, Lubin suggested that traditional finance and decentralized finance are converging, combining centuries of financial innovation with newer blockchain-based systems. This convergence is expected to result in a more granular and programmable global economy. While Lubin acknowledged the risks of quantum computing, he struck a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for years and see it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
