Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments
The swift advancement of AI agents is transforming the landscape of online payments, with crypto infrastructure naturally aligning as a key component, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In an interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was nearly impossible just nine months ago has become entirely feasible due to the rapid evolution of autonomous AI systems. As these agents advance, the need for native transaction methods has become apparent. "Agents defined in software and operating on software require money as software," Pollak explained, emphasizing the importance of seamless transactions for AI systems. This shift is driving interest in "agentic payments," where AI can autonomously pay for services like data access, computing, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his hope that the open-source payments protocol x402, developed by Coinbase and collaborators including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will play a pivotal role in this stack. X402 enables on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make a single API or smart contract call to move money globally, almost instantly and virtually free of charge, according to Pollak. Early traction is evident, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having flowed through X402 to date, about 95% of which has occurred on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations across AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can directly access. Pollak's long-term vision is to create an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. "The goal is for agents to be able to operate freely," he described, envisioning a system where software can discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real time without barriers. While fully autonomous "zero-human" businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes the more significant near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting their capabilities with AI. "Top performers are now leveraging agents to enhance their performance even further," he noted, describing workflows powered by multiple AI systems running in parallel. For the crypto industry, the broader challenge remains one of adoption. According to Pollak, the solution lies not in better marketing but in making crypto invisible to the user. "It will become much easier to promote crypto once people don't need to be told about it; they'll just experience it," he concluded.
