Expert Advisory Board Warns of Imminent Quantum Computing Threat to Cryptocurrency
A newly released report, commissioned by Coinbase and authored by a panel of renowned cryptographers and academics, issues a cautionary warning: while quantum computing does not currently pose an immediate threat to cryptocurrency, the industry cannot afford to delay in preparing for this eventuality. The report highlights that the development of a fault-tolerant quantum computer, capable of breaking standard encryption, is becoming increasingly plausible. As a result, major cryptocurrency ecosystems, including the Ethereum Foundation, Solana, and others, have begun exploring strategies to mitigate this risk, such as implementing quantum-resistant wallet designs and digital signatures. Although current quantum machines lack the necessary power to compromise the cryptography underpinning Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other networks, the report stresses that complacency is not an option. With estimates suggesting that a large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer could be built within a few years to a decade or more, the report advises migrating to quantum-resistant cryptography by 2035, as recommended by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). However, this transition will not be without challenges, including increased blockchain data costs, reduced throughput, and usability issues. To address these concerns, the report outlines multiple transition strategies, including hybrid systems and gradual upgrades, emphasizing the need for flexible approaches that balance current security and performance with the ability to rapidly upgrade when needed.
