Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Envisions AI Agents as the Future of Crypto Payments
The emergence of AI agents is revolutionizing the way online payments are made, with crypto infrastructure playing a pivotal role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was previously impossible has become a reality due to the rapid advancements in autonomous AI systems. As AI agents evolve, the need for seamless transactions has become apparent. "Agents, being software-based, require money to be software as well," Pollak explained. This shift has sparked interest in "agentic payments," where AI systems can autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his hope that the x402 open-source payments protocol, developed by Coinbase and collaborators including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be a crucial component of this stack. The x402 protocol enables on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make a single API call or smart contract call to transfer money globally, almost instantly, and at a minimal cost. According to Pollak, the x402 protocol has already seen significant traction, with approximately $48 million in payment volume, and about 95% of these transactions taking place on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations across AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can access directly. The long-term vision, as described by Pollak, is to create an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. "The goal is to allow agents to operate freely," he said, envisioning a system where software can discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real-time. While fully autonomous "zero-human" businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes that the more significant near-term impact will come from people augmenting themselves with AI. "Top performers are now using agents to enhance their performance even further," he said, describing workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the crypto industry, the primary challenge remains adoption. According to Pollak, the solution lies not in better marketing, but in making crypto invisible. "It will be much easier to promote crypto when people don't need to be aware of it; they will simply experience it," he said.
