Ethereum Co-Founder Warns of AI Risks and Highlights Blockchain's Future
The next significant development in the crypto space is anticipated to emerge from artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. He envisions a future where autonomous agents can interact, coordinate, and verify each other on decentralized networks, utilizing crypto infrastructure as the foundation for machine-driven activities. Lubin, set to speak at Consensus Miami 2026, believes that increasingly intelligent interfaces will simplify complexity, enabling users to engage with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI acting as an intermediary between humans and protocols. However, he cautions that if AI infrastructure remains controlled by a few large tech firms, it could pose significant risks. Lubin emphasizes the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to operate in transparent environments. The evolution of products like MetaMask, a Consensys product, reflects this shift, with the wallet being rebuilt as a 'personal money operating system' that users own and control. AI-powered agents could manage assets, execute transactions, and navigate a growing decentralized economy on behalf of users. Lubin also points to structural changes in the Ethereum ecosystem, including the rise of 'corporate chains' and the growth of stablecoins, which he views as a stepping stone toward more fully decentralized financial systems. He expects traditional finance and decentralized finance to converge, resulting in a more granular and programmable global economy. While acknowledging the potential risks of quantum computing, Lubin adopts a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for this eventuality and view it as part of the natural evolution of the Ethereum network.
