Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The price of Bitcoin (BTC) has surged past $78,000, boosting the overall cryptocurrency market. This upward movement follows an improvement in risk sentiment after U.S. President Donald Trump extended the Iran ceasefire, also leading to gains in stock index futures. The recent price increase marks the end of a period of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, providing momentum traders with the catalyst they had been anticipating. Momentum traders typically invest when there is evidence of an upward trend. Bitcoin's recent breakout serves as such a signal, potentially attracting more buyers and further accelerating momentum. According to analysts at Marex, the market had been confined to a range between $65 and $75 for months, and breaking out of this range is significant as it alters market behavior. Sellers who were previously comfortable selling during rallies above $74 must now reassess their positions. On-chain data also supports this trend, with the number of coins held in wallets associated with centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This indicates continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. However, QCP Capital advises caution due to the persistent richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used to hedge against potential price drops. The firm notes that cryptocurrency trends are currently tied to oil prices and interest rate expectations. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after rebounding from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, security risks in DeFi remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks. The Sui-based Volo protocol was recently drained of over $3 million, just days after the KelpDAO incident caused collateral damage across the sector.
