Sam Altman's World Project Unveils Significant Upgrade to Combat Deepfakes and Bots

World, a digital identity project backed by Sam Altman, has announced its most substantial upgrade to World ID, a 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure designed for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This major overhaul aims to tackle the growing concerns over bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online by enhancing authentication, payments, and internet services. The system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, where users must visit an Orb in person for their face and iris to be scanned, generating a unique cryptographic code. The images are then deleted, and only anonymized fragments of the code are sent across a distributed network to confirm the person's unique identity without revealing personal data. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on improved privacy, security, and usability, including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced to allow users to manage their credentials and authenticate across platforms seamlessly. World is expanding its partnerships with various consumer platforms, such as Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and is working with Zoom on a 'Deep Face' feature to verify meeting participants' identities. Additionally, World is collaborating with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements, aiming to establish a trust layer for automated workflows without requiring personal data.
